We’re almost two full weeks into the new year, and this is just the time when most rational people begin to buckle under the pressure of their resolutions. Many health experts say that donuts (from this point forward spelled “doughnuts”) are bad for your health, and Attack of the Killer Donuts it’s a cautionary tale of how good food can be the death of you if you don’t control your consumption.

Move Over, Killer Tomato!

Attack of the Killer Donuts it’s a modern homage to the B-movie elements of driving in the sense that your enjoyment will depend largely on how many road sodas you’ve managed to smuggle past the assistant flashing a flashlight in your trunk or glove compartment while you find your parking spot. . Protecting its audience in a mysterious way, the main antagonist of the film is a bunch of killer donuts, and their goal is to attack as many people as possible.

Bouncing around like violent, yeast-raised tennis balls, killer donuts show no mercy after being resurrected by a mad scientist whose life’s work is to bring the dead back to life.

Bad Flour Display

You can’t just have donuts randomly kill people without some sort of backstory to their confectionary killing because that would be stupid, so. Attack of the Killer Donuts defiantly takes steps to find some kind of story.

We are first introduced to Johnny Wentworth (Justin Ray), a rude teenager who lives with his mother and works at Dandy Donuts. Johnny is in love, and very one-sided, with Veronica (Lauren Elise), who is all over him and often takes advantage of him. Johnny’s mother, Emma (Kassandra Voyagis), tries to talk him into considering his co-worker and childhood friend, Michelle (Kayla Compton), as a love interest because they have a strong friendship that should definitely be taken to the next level.

Oh yeah, and living in Johnny’s basement is his mad scientist uncle, Luther (Michael Swan), who spends all his time injecting a mysterious serum into dead rats while trying to perfect his regenerative serum so he can win a Nobel Prize. Luther should not be taken as an antithesis Attack of the Killer Donuts because he means well, but all the cake-pumping actions in this film are a direct result of his carelessness despite his good intentions.

The Donut Uprising

Johnny steals his laptop from Uncle Luther’s lab before going to work at Dandy Donuts. Johnny and Michelle spend most of their time handing out free donuts to regulars after a fight breaks out at the store, much to the dismay of their incompetent and penny-pinching employer, Cliff (Chris De Christopher). At this point in Attack of the Killer Donutsloads of free product haven’t been infected (or boxed), but the bottom line is that there are plenty of potentially violent donuts about to be distributed.

Luther arrives at Dandy Donuts to pick up a laptop and gets into an argument with Cliff, who once locked him out of the store because of his unusual behavior. During the altercation, Luther’s serum flies out of his shirt pocket and into the containers, setting some Attack of the Killer Donuts with movement.

The donuts grow teeth and excrete a poisonous green goo that infects their victims, and all hell breaks loose at Dandy Donuts before the sentient candies scatter and terrorize the town.

Not fully realizing the gravity of the situation, it’s up to Johnny and Michelle to inform the public and learn more about Uncle Luther’s research so they can create an antiserum and save the day.

Violent Bloodshed

Attack of the Killer Donuts it has all the right ingredients for a well-informed, low-budget B-movie. Its violence is so extreme that you can’t help but laugh at the way the antagonists talk and look ridiculous as they snort and indulge in their studies. Sure, Officer Rogers (C. Thomas Howell) has access to guns, but he’s hopeless at defending himself against the killer donuts because there just aren’t enough bullets in the world to quell the problem, especially after being blinded by an explosion of jelly.

To enjoy it to the fullest Attack of the Killer Donuts, you need to go into your viewing experience knowing that this creature feature does not take itself seriously at all. It’s schlocky by design, and the results are deliberately bad to drive the point home. But if you need motivation to stick to your New Year’s resolutions, there’s nothing I can think of that works better than watching your favorite fried treats hit the masses, leaving no stone unturned in their path.
