JONATHAN TULEY: The Trump case shows that NY can’t handle the truth. Rams of judgment in that home

With the sentencing of Donald Trump on Friday, the final verdict in the New York criminal trial of the president-elect is in place. This decision is not what led to him being arrested or tried by the next president. Acting Judge Juan Merchan has undermined the entire New York legal system.

Given the country’s leading legal system, figures such as New York Attorney General Letitia James, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Justices Arthur F. Engoron and Juan Merchan have caused the system to be equipped for political purposes. Trump will leave the case for the White House in less than two weeks, but the New York program will become famous after this date.

The case has long been criticized by conservative legal observers, including Trump’s staunchest critics, as legal folly. Even senior CNN legal analyst Elie Honig criticized the case as legally flawed and unprecedented when Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., simply called it “b—s–t.”

It is a crime based on non-crime. Bragg took a long-dead mistake and brought it back to life with a novel and an unfounded theory. Using federal violations that have never been charged, let alone tried, Bragg turned a misdemeanor into a slew of charges and actually tried Trump on federal charges.

Merchan not only allowed those charges to be brought to trial but then added layers of reversible error in an effort to impeach Trump at any cost. As a result, he was respected by the liberal media and many New Yorkers. However, Trump has managed to pull 3.6 million New York votes, or 42.7%, in the 2024 election. After all the rules and all the profiteering (including a very biased media and a huge war chest), Vice President Kamala Harris lost hundreds of thousands of votes in 2024 compared to Joe Biden just four years ago.

Most polls showed that the public saw the Manhattan crime case for what it was: crude legislation aimed at a leading political opponent. The election itself felt like the biggest decision in history as citizens rejected the political, legal, and media institutions in one of our nation’s most historic elections.

The New York court system will now have a chance to redeem itself but few are holding their breath. An appeals court has yet to rule on Attorney General Lettia James’ equally frivolous appeal against Trump. Despite the jury’s skepticism about Endoron’s use of the law to levy $455 million in fines and interest, we are still awaiting a verdict.

Most expect this criminal case to escape the New York court system. With this appeal, this vendor’s reversible error cart will finally stand before the Supreme Court itself.

With its decision on Thursday night, the timing of the decision could not have been better for Trump. The Supreme Court has also shown that it has shown restraint and independence in these cases. In response to the decision, Trump struck a chord Thursday night and refused to criticize the Court, saying “This is far from over and I respect the court’s opinion.”

Friday morning’s maximum sentence from Judge Merchan reflects the lack of seriousness in the case. It was more airy than a Goodyear blimp, fueled by hot tempers and rhetoric. The sentence was the vice that shows the biggest gap in this case.

The decision is within. New York’s legal system gave it its own.
