Currently, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu the remake seems to be a bloodbath at the box office, and this has started endless debates among horror geeks about whether or not it is superior to the original film. How Copyright Law Turned Dracula Into Nosferatu

The German film was made without the permission of his estate, and Stoker’s widow Florence did not feel that FW Murnau’s earlier film made enough changes to the source material. He filed a lawsuit that resulted in many copies of the original Nosferatu destroyed.
Fortunately, some copies survived, and by the time Herzog decided to remake his own, Stoker’s previous copyright had expired. This allowed him to name his monster in the 1979 version Dracula instead of Nosferatu.
