France hits back at Trump’s use of military pressure to take Greenland, says now ‘survival of the fittest’

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Wednesday that the European Union will not allow President-elect Trump to take Greenland by military force.

“There is no doubt that the European Union can allow other countries … to attack their borders, whoever they are,” Barrot said on French radio, according to Politico.

Barrot added that he doubted Trump would take the unusual step of attacking Greenland.

“If you ask me if I think the United States will attack Greenland, my answer is no. But have we entered a period of time where survival is possible? Then my answer is yes,” said Barrot.

That stark warning comes after Trump made various statements calling the island’s location vital to US national security and economic interests and expressing interest in buying it from Denmark. He made similar comments about wresting the Panama Canal from Panamanian control after the US abandoned the canal in 1977.

On Tuesday, the incoming US president would not rule out using the military to control Greenland or the Panama Canal when asked about the issue at a press conference.

The reporter asked Trump if he could assure the world that he would not use military or economic power to control the Panama Canal and Greenland.

“No, I can’t guarantee you on either of these. But I can say this, we need them for our economic security,” Trump said.
