For studio executives and fans, there are high hopes for that Daredevil: Born Again will be the smash Marvel hit that Disney+ desperately needs. There are many reasons to be optimistic that the show will succeed, including the return of key actors who made the original Netflix show a fan favorite. For me, however, the biggest reason for optimism is that Daredevil: Born Again will be rated TV-MA, which represents Disney’s stated desire to diversify its MCU content.
Daredevil Needs To Be Black
It’s part of what makes Netflix Daredevil show such a blow that it was not afraid to be extremely dark as necessary. We got gory scenes like the Kingpin killing a flunky with a car door and the Punisher killing almost everyone who comes his way on Ryker’s Island. When Daredevil: Born Again was first announced, fans were worried that Disney would take a lighter, kid-friendly approach to this brutal franchise. The TV-MA rating means it can be as brutal as ever, but the main reason I’m impressed is that, for the first time in a long time, Disney is ready to create different shows for different types of viewers.
Good before Daredevil: Born Again was produced and before Disney + existed, the House of Mouse released Marvel content on various platforms aimed at specific audiences. Young fans have found programs like these Cloak & Dagger on Freeform and Those who run away on Hulu while older fans get movie-like content on ABC with series like this one Agents of SHIELD again Agent Carter. Netflix has been the true home of mature Marvel content, delivering shows like Daredevil again Jessica Jones that, obviously, couldn’t be easily shown anywhere other than live streaming.
When Disney+ arrived, however, all the shows were aimed at the same average audience Agents of SHIELD were intended. That is not inherently a bad thing. Agents of SHIELD was a strong show in its own right, and the original Disney+ shows as such WandaVision again Loki it proved that the studio still has great stories to tell. However, it became clear that adult content was out of focus after Disney “erroneously” uploaded an episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and subsequently gave its entire legacy to the Netflix MCU showing a content warning.
The New Season of Disney/Marvel TV-MA
Now, Daredevil: Born Again earning a TV-MA rating is proof that Disney is ready to go full steam ahead in creating more adult content. Indeed, i The Echo miniseries and it was TV-MA, but that sounds like a marketing angle for a show that flew under most people’s radar. The New Birthhowever, it’s the most anticipated show for Marvel fans for Disney+, and allowing the popular character to get some R-rated adventures means the broadcaster is finally ready to create more adult shows for mature audiences.
If Daredevil: Born Again seems to be popular on Disney+, we can get more TV-MA Marvel content. For example, if the Punisher gets his revival series, Frank Castle will definitely need this mature measure to properly punish his enemies. Some familiar characters like Elektra and Ghost Rider would benefit from having one series that wouldn’t be hindered by the need to make family-friendly programming. And, since it looks like we may never get that Blade movie, the show could be reborn as Disney+ with all the funny and violent profanity of the original Wesley Snipes movies.
Granted, all of this may be putting the cart before the horse (or should that be the aisle before the hero?). Daredevil: Born Again would be a good fit for Disney+, especially after the show had to fire existing writers and directors to creatively adapt the entire series. Still, there’s always hope, and we can only hope that House of Mouse embraces the diversity of storytelling that always makes Marvel great. If not, Marvel’s Netflix era may be remembered as the last time the franchise was willing to swing for the broadcast fence.
