Washington Post columnist Matt Bai criticized President Biden on Monday for holding on to power for too long, saying the president’s legacy will be that he “doesn’t know when he’s going to leave.”
“After a distinguished service, he will be fondly remembered – like many of his generation – as a man who never knew when he was going to leave,” Bai wrote.
The president dropped out of the 2024 race at the end of July, almost a month after a poor debate against President-elect Donald Trump in June. Vice President Kamala Harris took the reins of the Democratic presidential campaign and ended up losing.
“By the time Biden took the stage for his debate with Trump in June, it was clear that history had been hijacked by a pernicious hoax — one shared and promoted by his top aides and the reporters who covered him the most,” Bai wrote. , after realizing that Biden deserved credit for his legislative achievements.

Bai explained what may have been Biden’s thought process in his final year as president and said he did not want to step down.
“And then there’s the vexing issue of who will succeed him. After meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris in the tumultuous, divisive summer of 2020, despite her being seen as an interim presidential candidate, Democratic leaders and Biden’s aides are worried that she won’t be able to win (the primary of competition would answer that question, yes, but today’s Democrats are terrified of any process they can’t editing it.),” Bai wrote.
The author also shared that despite the negative approval ratings, Biden thought it was the best way to beat Trump. After Harris lost, the president reportedly regretted leaving office, and believed he should have beaten Trump.
“Even now, in the hours of Biden’s declining reputation, it’s impossible not to look at him and think: here is a guy who was supposed to run for president again. Twenty years from now, it will be among the most seemingly stupid acts of denial that any participating party has ever engaged in,” he continued.

A few days after Harris’ loss, Bai called the president and his closest aides to preach the message, “You don’t really see what you think you see.”

“Biden has always served his country in a fair and honest way. I’m not sure we can say the same, even for Democratic aides and leaders who thought voters could be misled by their experience,” he wrote in a Nov. 8 column.
