Brutalist Director Supports Aubrey Plaza After Jeff Baena’s Death

The Brutalist director Brady Corbett he mentioned Plaza, 40, and Baena at the end of his acceptance speech on Sunday, January 5, after winning the award for Best Director. “My heart goes out to Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family,” he said.

Plaza did not appear at the awards show before the speech, which came two days after Baena died by suicide at the age of 47. Us Weekly confirmed Baena’s death at his Los Angeles residence on Friday, January 3.

Baena was an indie filmmaker known for projects like I Heart Huckabees, Life After Beth, The Little Hours, Horse Girl again Spin Me Round. She used to work with Plaza, whom she started dating in 2011 and married almost a decade later.

“My first film was a great learning experience in all areas, so working with him was beneficial because we have a short relationship and a close relationship,” said Baena speaking to Plaza in his interview with August 2022. Newsweek. “As I do a lot of things, I have been grateful for everything he brings me.”

Baena praised his wife’s dedication to her work, adding, “She’s incredibly talented and very smart and obviously really good at producing. And he writes. There are very few people who can wear as many hats as her, with as much beauty as her.”

The screenwriter noted that Plaza is “amazing” in “everything she does.”

“People usually point to him as the best part of any project he’s on,” he continued at the time. “He has an incredible talent and I am very lucky to have him in my life.”

Although Plaza doesn’t talk much about his marriage, he has previously shared details about his marriage to Baena.

“A lot of things happened during the COVID period for me. Yes, we got married. It’s a big story,” he shared during a December 2021 appearance on the show The Ellen Degeneres Show. “We were bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s true, look at it.”

Plaza added: “I built an altar of instant love in our backyard. The facts of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. Things like that. Then a man from Alhambra appeared wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a bag [to perform the ceremony]. … I don’t remember much of it, it was vague. But I’m sure it’s legal.”
