Mahomes, 29, did not play in Sunday’s game, January 5, after the Chiefs won the No.

Since the game was meaningless from a standing perspective, the Chiefs decided not to risk their star starting quarterback taking any snaps.

In his place, a veteran backup Carson Wentz started the game at Denver Empower Field at Mile High.

“I have faced it before, so I am not worried about all that,” the Chiefs coach Andy Reid he told reporters on Wednesday, January 1 about Mahomes’ stay. “It gives the other guys a chance here to grow and you can use everybody.”

Reid, 66, added, “The important thing is to make sure we stay sharp in all areas this game and in the weeks to come… period.” I make sure I do that in practice and the guys go out, players and coaches, work on that.”

Wentz, 32, attempted just two passes this season as Mahomes’ backup, but said he’s ready to meet the challenge.

“I’m going to get ready to go out and win and do well on this offense,” Wentz told reporters on Wednesday.

He continued, “I think it will be great to get reps. Obviously the preseason helps, but that was limited and looks like another lifetime already. This will definitely help if needed at any capacity down there in the playoffs. But to be honest, I’m happy to go out and play football.”

The break also gives Mahomes a chance to continue healing from the ankle injury he suffered in the Chiefs game on December 15 against the Cleveland Browns.
