Shifting Gears’ Kat Dennings Feels Trust ‘Instantly’ With Tim Allen
It didn’t take long Kat Dennings again Tim Allen creating a real life bond similar to theirs Changing Gears a daughter and two fathers.
“It clicked quickly. “We had lunch after he accepted the role and I immediately felt like I could trust him for some reason,” Dennings, 38, shared exclusively in a new call Us Weekly. “And he opened up to me very quickly. so I [was] like, ‘Okay, this guy’s like taking me in.'”
Dennings went on to explain that his “instant” connection with Allen has already strengthened.
“For some reason it just worked right away – maybe because I grew up watching him most of my life, but it just worked. It felt very organic,” he recalls. “And as [filming has] it’s advanced, our scenes are pretty funny, if I do say so myself. Arguments are my favorite scenes because I’m not afraid of anything. There is no fear for either of us. We just totally want it and it’s so much fun. “
Changing Gearspremiering Wednesday, January 8 on ABC, follows widowed father Matt (Allen) and his estranged daughter, Riley (Dennings), as they find themselves living together and working to repair their relationship. The sitcom marks Dennings’ return to the multi-camera comedy nearly a decade after he played Max on the hit CBS show. 2 Broken Girls from 2011 to 2017.
“At first I panicked because it had been a long time. I felt like I forgot everything. Then as soon as we started the first take, it was like I had never left. It was pretty crazy,” Dennings said. “I really prepared myself. I was really in over my head about it. Then it felt organic. I feel like I never stopped doing multicam work. I love you, I really do.”

Disney/Mike TaingBehind the scenes, Changing Gears reunited Dennings with the runner Michelle Nadera former colleague 2 Broken Girls and Hulu Dollface. The Easter eggs don’t stop there, with a guest appearance from Dennings’ former Dollface costar Brenda’s song – and that’s only the beginning.
“Brenda is one of my best friends in life because we met A doll’s house then our Michelle Changing Gears the show. And Brenda and I always talked about doing more camera work together. We joked, ‘Wouldn’t that be great? He did so [a guest spot] because we just want to stay,” Dennings said jokingly about the upcoming episode. “I won’t be able to reveal many of the stars who will be invited, but there will be amazing people. I think Michelle has put in a few special cues for me throughout the series.”

In addition to Dennings and Allen, 71, Changing Gears and the stars Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins again Barrett Margolis. Before the season premiered, fans were speculating about the potential chemistry between Dennings and Scott’s characters.
“What I think personally — because it’s one of my favorite things, too — is that I’m on a stretcher,” she told us about the potential romance. “The best relationships on the screen stretch for many, many, many seasons because the payoff becomes very satisfying. Hopefully – if we’re lucky enough to go to many seasons – it will last that long.”
While reflecting on his time on the set of Changing Gears so far, Dennings has called filming “a magical experience,” adding, “I was talking to a friend and I wasn’t sure what to do next.” He was like, ‘If you could just describe your dream project, what would it be?’ I was like, ‘I’d like to do a sitcom again.’ I just described this situation exactly. Then the next day, I got a call about this.”

He concluded: “It was shocking. That still confuses me because I feel like I wanted it and it happened. That’s how it happened. And I grew up watching [Tim’s show] Home Improvement so I was very excited about the idea of being his daughter. It’s been great and I feel very lucky.”
