Many British airports are closing runways following heavy snow

Many airports across the United Kingdom closed their runways on Sunday due to snow and ice.

Much of the UK was under snow and ice warnings on Sunday, including most of Northern Ireland, most of Scotland, and much of central and northern England, according to the UK Met Office. Almost all of Wales is under a yellow rain warning.

Manchester Airport, the country’s third largest airport by passenger volume according to the Civil Aviation Authority, said on Sunday morning it had temporarily closed its runways due to heavy snow. Ground crews were trying to clear snow from the runway, a post on social media said, before the runway was reopened around 9:45 a.m.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport also temporarily closed its runway on Sunday morning due to snow, before reopening at 10:15 a.m. Newcastle International Airport said “heavy and persistent snow” was causing disruption to flight schedules.

Birmingham Airport closed for a few hours around midnight so crews could clear the snow, but reopened later on Sunday “due to (hard) crews working through the night,” X said.

And while Bristol Airport in western England closed its doors on Saturday due to “challenging weather,” it reopened in the evening. The airport warned that the closure could disrupt flights departing on Sunday.

The railways in England, Scotland and Wales have also been affected due to bad weather, said the National Rail of the country on Sunday morning.

“Ice and snow may mean speed restrictions and line closures to ensure trains are able to run safely on the tracks,” the service disruption announcement said.

National Highways, the government agency that runs highways in England, has issued a nationwide severe weather warning for snow across England on Saturday and Sunday.

“Road users are advised to take extra care when traveling over the weekend,” he said.
