Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Lions is calling for changes to the NFL playoff format before the game to get the top seed
For the first time in NFL history, a 14-win team will have to settle for a wild card spot in the NFL playoffs.
The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, both 14-2, will face off Sunday night for both the NFC North title and the top seed in the conference.
The loser will drop to the fifth seed in the bracket with the highest wildcard spot—despite a 14-win season.

It wouldn’t be a weird playoff debut. There were 7-9 teams that won the divisions, which meant they automatically qualified for the playoffs.
But with his team in danger of losing just three games but away from home on a wild card weekend, Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown says the structure needs a facelift.
“It’s crazy. I think the law should be changed,” said St. Brown told reporters this week. “Obviously, if you win a division, it should be clear that you’ve made the playoffs, but to have a 14-win team that has to go on the road is crazy. But I guess I don’t make the rules.”

The NFL and MLB have similar formats where the top seed gets a bye, and all division winners have a chance to play at home in the first round. The NBA’s seeding is based on conference standings regardless of division, while the NHL does a combination of conference standings and divisions but not the byes.
St. Brown says his team doesn’t have a problem though.
“Either way, I think we’re going to be good. Whether it’s on the road or a bye week and we’re playing at home, we’re built or not,” he said.

The Lions and Vikings will kick off in Detroit on Sunday. The Packers, also in the NFC North, sit at 11-5 and are the sixth seed heading into the weekend.
