FBI releases video showing plot to plant January 2021 pipe bomb outside DNC, RNC offices in DC

The FBI on Thursday released new video allegedly showing the January 5, 2021 suspect who planted bombs outside the offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee in Washington, DC.

Along with the video, the FBI also revealed that the suspect is believed to be about 5-foot, 7-inches tall in an effort to get new tips from the public before the fourth anniversary of the crime.

The FBI noted that a $500,000 reward remains available for tips leading to an arrest.

The attempted attack took place the night before the attack on Jan. 6, 2021, at the US Capitol, but there is no clear connection between the two events.

“Without confirming the identity of the suspect, it’s very difficult to establish a motive,” David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington office, told the Associated Press. “Therefore, it would be difficult for us to say that there is a connection, although we cannot say that there is none.”

Investigators are not sure if the suspect is male or female.

The suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, face mask, black gloves and Nike Air Max Speed ​​Turf shoes, the FBI said, adding that less than 25,000 pairs of the shoes were sold between August 2018 and the time of the attack.

“Based on the clothing, those are probably the most noticeable or distinctive feature when it comes to what the suspect is wearing,” Sundberg said. “We hope someone can see that.”

The FBI has investigated more than 600 tips, reviewed about 39,000 video files and conducted more than 1,000 interviews over the past four years.

The suspect then planted a second bomb on the street behind the Republican National Committee building around 8:16 p.m. and was last seen on surveillance footage two minutes later passing the line of DC houses wearing a backpack that investigators believe he was carrying. pipe bombs.

“We still believe that someone has information that they probably didn’t realize was important until now,” said a follower of the FBI video. “We’re asking you to come forward and share that information with the FBI.”

No one was injured in the attempted attack and the bombs were kept safe, but the FBI said it could have been deadly.

Both Vice President Kamala Harris and then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi were near the DNC office before the first bomb was discovered on the afternoon of Jan. 6 and it was closed.
