LeBron had a candid interview with NBA media on his 40th birthday about his career.
“I was in my 30s, so just waking up was like, ‘Oh shoot, oh damn, you’re 40?'” James said. “It’s really funny to know where I am, to see where I’m playing this game at a high level, I’m still a young man but I’m older in the scheme of how many years I’ve been in this industry.”
Teasing everyone, LeBron says he can keep playing for a long time, but he won’t.
“To be honest, if I really wanted to, I could play this game at a higher level for maybe one – it’s amazing that I can say this – but maybe another five to seven years, if I wanted to,” James. said. “But I won’t do that.”
The Lakers great was then asked if the Lakers winning the chip would motivate him to continue playing.
“You ask that question, the first person I thought of was Jason Kelce,” James said, referring to the former Philadelphia Eagles center who now serves as an NFL analyst for ESPN. “At the beginning of this year, he sat down [interview] with [Eagles quarterback] Jalen Hurts talking about that same thing, the fact that [the Eagles are] so good this year and have you ever thought of coming back and maybe not retiring? That’s right [he has]. But he is very happy with the decision he has made.”
He’s still high in purple and gold, though the team holds an 18-14 record this season and seventh in the West.
“Right now, I think we’re a very good team,” James said. “I think we have a chance to compete with anyone in the league. Are we at championship level? Can we win the tournament right now? No, I don’t think so. But that’s good because we have a lot of room for improvement.
“I don’t know if that determines my longevity because it doesn’t change my work in any sense or fashion.”
