Aaron Rodgers says the Jets’ season finale against the Dolphins could be his last NFL game

Aaron Rodgers admitted Sunday’s game could be his last in the NFL.

Rodgers was asked by reporters if the New York Jets’ final game of the season against the Miami Dolphins would be the last of his career on Wednesday.

“Yes, of course,” replied Rodgers.

Rodgers hasn’t made a final decision, but says he will before the free agency begins in March. Rodgers has a contract with the Jets next season, and is expected to earn $23 million. However, the Jets will also hire a new coach and general manager in the offseason after Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas, the regime that brought Rodgers to New York, were fired in the middle of the season.

“I’ve kind of stopped dealing with the reality of the situation,” Rodgers admitted about the problems with Sunday’s game. “I think there will be a change here, and when I’m there [not] It’s part of the transition, so I want to make sure everyone knows that I have nothing but gratitude for my time here.”

He added that he expects the new coach and general manager to make a quick decision about his future with the team.

“I don’t think we’re going to get that far,” Rodgers said. “There’s going to be a regime change here, at least with GM. Whatever they end up doing, I’m sure I’ll get a call or a chat and go from there.”

Rodgers missed most of his first season with the Jets last year after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in the Jets’ Week 1 opener against the Buffalo Bills. This year, despite a healthy full season without Rodgers, the Jets have gone 4-12.

“I’m disappointed with the way I played and the team but I’m very grateful for the opportunity. If I feel happy to come back and they want to make another run this time, it would be great, but it’s not. We don’t care about the situation we’re in.”

The season was also struggling for Rodgers. After he was sacked four times against the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, he became the most sacked quarterback in NFL history. He has been sacked 568 times in 247 games – more than Tom Brady, who was sacked 565 times in his career. Russell Wilson is right up there with 556 sacks.

The Jets quarterback has been sacked 37 times this season. He led the league in sacks twice in his career – both while with the Green Bay Packers.

Still, Rodgers considers his last two years in New York the best of his life.

“I mean thank you, honestly. It’s been the best two years of my life,” Rodgers said. “That’s a change of perspective that happened sometime during the rebuilding process last year. It’s just fun, getting back to the love of the game, getting to know these guys that are here, and getting to know the great men and women that work here. It’s been a lot of fun.
