The comedian grilled CNN over firing Don Lemon when he was given a New Year’s Eve shot
The comedian reminded CNN of a difficult part of his past on Tuesday night when he was given a shot by New Year’s Eve hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen.
“Oh no. No, I don’t like it. The last black man to drink on this network is fired,” said Roy Wood Jr., of Daily Show fame. “I’ll keep it with water for now. I need to settle down.”
Wood appeared to be referring to former broadcaster Don Lemon, who was part of the network’s New Year’s Eve specials while running and drinking during the coverage. Guests of Fellow Times Square, Michael Ian Black and Amber Ruffin, did not refuse the offer of a shot.
Wood co-hosts CNN’s weekly Saturday quiz show, “Did I Got News for You,” alongside Black and Ruffin.
DON LEMON IS ME ON RANT TRUMP SUPPORTERS BACK ONLINE: ‘VERY BAD—BAD’
Lemon was fired by CNN in 2023 after a series of controversies and struggles for the newly launched AM program “CNN This Morning.”
The left-leaning host was ousted from her original slot to become part of then-CEO Chris Licht’s three-person morning show team, but the show never took off.
Lemon drew the ire of his network colleagues in 2023 when he suggested that Nikki Haley, then 51 years old, was no longer “in her speech”. At the time, Haley spoke freely about the age concerns of President Biden, who was forced out of the race after a year by members of his own party.
Lemon stayed for another two months before Licht dropped him. Licht himself was shown the door in June of that year.
Lemon recently made headlines for his attacks on Donald Trump’s supporters amid a rift among part of his base over H-1B visas.
LIBERAL MEDIA FOUNDERS BREAK TRUMP SUPPORTERS, ‘TRUMPISM’: ‘A COLLISION OF HATE AND HATE’
“You got nominated because you’re in f—ing service and you don’t even see it because you have a stupid MAGA brain and you don’t get it,” he said. “How stupid and stupid are you?”
He stood by his words on his YouTube program on Tuesday, saying that his critics are “boers.”
“I’m not referring to all Trump supporters,” Lemon said. “I’m talking to people with MAGA brains who will say and do anything to excuse any behavior by Donald Trump, any bad behavior by the MAGA movement.”
He continued, “So yeah, I stand by my words! And if you don’t like what I said, then f—too bad, I don’t care!”
Lemon also called out the “hypocrisy” of Trump supporters who attacked him for his language while defending their “cult leader.”
“He’s been hurt like this. He expects more from me, a freelance journalist, former cable news anchor, than he does from someone sitting in the Oval Office. Because his mouth is worse than mine,” Lemon. said.
Lemon also attacked Time Magazine last month for singling out Trump Person of the Yearcalling the choice “a joke.”

“If they wanted to make someone the Person of the Year, I don’t know, they could do it with any person. They could do it to someone who represents democracy, who represents democracy in the country,” Lemon said.
