Ten people died in New Orleans when a car plowed into a crowd

Ten people were killed and 30 others were injured after a car plowed into a crowd in New Orleans, emergency officials said.

Nola Ready, the Emergency Department, said in a statement that the incident happened around 03:00 local time (08:00 GMT) on Bourbon Street in the city’s French Quarter.

A New Orleans police spokesman told CBS, the BBC’s US news partner, that “initial reports indicate that the vehicle may have rammed into a group of people”.

A CBS reporter saw several people on the ground injured at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal streets.

The BBC confirmed a video from the scene showed a man lying on the ground as others gathered, before gunfire rang out, causing the crowd to disperse.

Another graphic video shows two injured people lying in the street.

Eyewitnesses told CBS that the car hit the crowd, and the driver started firing a weapon, which led to the police returning fire.

The police have not yet confirmed this report.

Nola Ready had previously said on social media that there had been “an incident of multiple injuries at Canal and Bourbon Street” and told those nearby to “leave the area”.
