Comic slams Dave Chappelle in new Netflix special for making trans jokes: ‘It’s not funny, it’s dangerous’

Comedian Michelle Buteau has criticized Dave Chappelle for cashing in on “unfunny” and “harmful” jokes about the transgender community on his Netflix specials.

Buteau hosted her own comedy special “Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” which premiered on Netflix on Tuesday. During his performance, he made an offhand joke about his “good friend, who is in love with other black people,” which he said was an example of a respectful way to refer to the LGBTQ community.

“What I’m saying is that it can be done. It can be done. We can tell jokes and stories and not undermine the whole community,” said Buteau. “We can do that, we can make it funny. You just have to work at it, right?

“So if you could meet Dave Chappelle, would you let him know that—? I don’t think he knows that—.”

“I don’t think we’re going to meet Dave because he’s a GOAT. And he’s a GOAT, if that means ‘going through the motions.’

“Dave, it’s not funny. It’s dangerous,” he continued. “I can’t believe that someone can make millions and millions of dollars by making people feel unsafe. That really baffles me.”

Buteau announced, “I’m showing this— tonight. This is taking over Radio City Music Hall, and I’m going to tell everybody that I want to make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel safe, seen, protected, heard. and happy.”

Speaking to USA Today about the special, Buteau also referenced Chappelle’s comments and emphasized the importance of community support.

“I’m not saying you can’t say things – I’m just saying, ‘Can you make it funny?’ Because it doesn’t sound funny,” added Buteau. “You’re hurting people and making it dangerous. And it’s not just Chappelle – it’s part of the culture that I don’t understand.

“When people say, ‘We can’t do what we did before. Yes! Slavery was legal, you guys sometimes have to move on, and I’m sorry if it’s different, but wrap your mind around it.

In 2021, Chappelle got into hot water with the left for making transgender jokes in his Netflix special, “The Closer.” Trans activists urged Netflix to stop this program and a group of Netflix employees also held a protest.

In 2023, he continued to make jokes about transgender people in his special “The Dreamer,” in which he recounted visiting Jim Carrey on the set of his 1999 film, The Man on the Moon.

Carrey used the “method” method of impersonating real-life comedian Andy Kaufman by always being in character, and Chappelle was told by the crew to call Carrey “Andy” when he met him.

“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend this n—a was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. And he was obviously Jim Carrey. I could look at him and I knew he was Jim Carrey,” he noted. “Anyway, I say all that to say that it’s the way people pass by that makes me feel.”
