Norwegian star Viktor Hovland remains a game-time decision for The Sentry, this week’s PGA Tour season opener in Kapalua, Hawaii, because of a broken toe.
Hovland also told Norsk Golf that he is no longer working with golf coach Joe Mayo, the second split in a year.
Hovland parted ways with Mayo in late 2023, then rejoined him in the spring of 2024 as he worked with several different coaches. But about a month ago, Hovland let Mayo go again.
“We disagreed a bit about the way forward, what’s right for me,” said Hovland, 27. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot now and I’m more experienced, I don’t need someone to hold my hand anymore. Hovland told Norsk Golf that it will take four to six weeks for him to fully recover, but he has not retired from The Sentry.
“I have hit a few balls even though I have no shoes, without putting pressure on my right foot,” he said. “But my toe hurts a lot already, a big difference from yesterday. So, we’ll see. I have a few days to decide. Legally, I can wait until Thursday, I think. For now, the choice is to stay in the starting lineup.”
The Sentry field has already lost World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in another freak accident. Scheffler cut her right hand while preparing Christmas dinner and found shards of glass in her palm, which required surgery.
