World No. 26 Thompson, who hit the ground Rafael Nadal quarterfinals in Brisbane last January, advancing to a second-round replay vs. American Alex Michelsenwho saved the match point against the Aussie Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(10).
Thompson says the toughest test for the 2025 season is that it starts in 2024 giving the players, especially the Aussies, a very short break.
“[The offseason] it feels like two seconds,” Thompson said with a smile. “Yeah, it’s tough, especially for us Aussies. We are actually leaving after the Australian Open and not coming back until the Davis Cup is over. The season is that long. We are coming back at the end of November.
“Yeah, we’ve been away for 10, 11 months. It feels like we get a three-week break when you play Davis Cup. That’s great. Then you push them to start early.”
Thompson ripped the show as a “joke.”
“I don’t know how the ’25 season starts in ’24. I mean, it’s a joke,” Thompson said. “We have to play next week. There are a lot of things in our game that need to be cleaned up a bit at the moment.”
