Chevy Chase Told SNL Biopic Director He ‘Should Be Ashamed’ of Film

Director Jason Reitman shared Chase’s reaction to the film in a recent episode of Dana Carvey again David SpadeThe “Fly on the Wall” podcast. Setting the stage for the story, Carvey, 69, laughed: “Chevy likes to say something you shouldn’t say, to the extreme, where it can go wherever it wants to go.”
Reitman, 47, began by noting that he had known Chase, 81, “my whole life” and had grown up as friends with his children. “So, Chevy goes in to watch a movie, and he’s there [his wife] Jayni and watch a movie,” he explained. “And he’s in the band, and he comes up to me afterwards and taps me on the shoulder and says, ‘Well, you should be ashamed.’
The comment drew laughter from both Carvey and Spade, 60, who said: “What a Chevy thing. You couldn’t write it better. How funny.”

Carvey, meanwhile, added: “You know that’s funny, like, ‘Okay, that’s the worst thing you can say to a director at that point.'”
After Chase’s revision, Reitman said he tried to “calibrate” the meaning of the character’s words. “I know, ‘Okay, I’m only getting 1,000 percent Chevy Chase time for me right now. And from a comedy point of view, that’s pure and wonderful,’” he said. “But then again, I’ve just spent, like, two years of my life reviving this period and trying to hold Chevy right, and, even in the ego, to find humanity and give him a moment to be loved – no, none of this. s- is played. He doesn’t talk about that stuff .”
Spade, on the other hand, wasn’t sure how much of Chase’s comment was a joke and how much was true. “It’s a funny thing to say, but then, you have to look at the meter and say, ‘Which percentage was real? Was it all a joke, or is there something he’s not happy about? [with]?’” he said. “But you just don’t know and you go, and you go, ‘Well, see.’
Saturday Nightwhich hit theaters in October, following its cast and crew It’s SNL in the exciting and hectic 90 minutes leading up to the show’s first broadcast in October 1975. Reitman shared his story shortly after the director Chris Columbus he told Vanity Fair that he stopped working in 1989 National Lampoon’s Christmas Holiday after the meeting with Chase.
“I talked about how I see the film, how I want to make the film. He didn’t say anything,” Columbus told the newspaper in an interview published on December 23. “I spent about half an hour talking. He didn’t say a word. … Forty minutes into the meeting, he says, ‘Wait a minute. Are you a director?’ I said, ‘Yes … I’m directing a film.’ … He said, ‘Oh, I thought you were a drummer.'”
He continued: “I left dinner and thought, ‘There’s no way I’m going to make a movie with this guy. First of all, he is not dating. He treats me like a . I don’t need this. I prefer not to work again. I better write.’”
