Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said her party is sticking to its “old ways” while responding to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s failed bid to chair the Democratic Oversight Committee, and suggested they focus more on seniority.
“While I think they’re both absolutely qualified, I think within the Democratic Caucus, we’re still stuck in our old ways of doing things which is that you get there because of seniority. So if you’ve been there a long time, you get a post, and I don’t think we’ve sat there completely and said, ‘ who might be better equipped at this point?'” Crockett said.
Ocasio-Cortez lost a bid to be the top Democrat on the committee to Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., moderate. The 74-year-old attorney’s victory over Ocasio-Cortez was seen as a blow to progressives.
“I think America is looking at us and saying, wait a minute, we lost the election, and we know that the Senate has lost seats, now, the House has taken seats, right? But I think they are saying, we look to all of you to show us that you are willing to shake it up if it means that we can move this country forward, ” Crockett said.

Crockett said the Oversight Committee would be in good hands under Connolly, but said frequent leadership changes would benefit Democrats.
“I think that in the caucus we will have discussions on how we manage the leadership, because on the Republican side, they have time limits so you cannot stay in those positions for a long time, so they end up sending their leadership a lot. more often than we do on the side of the Democratic Alliance,” he said.
Ocasio-Cortez’s loss was criticized by many members of the media, including MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, who said it was a clear opportunity for Democrats to show they had learned from the election results.
“This is one of the few committees in Congress that generates national attention or media coverage. Under Jamie Raskin, it’s been a critical platform for countering Republican disinformation. And while I have deep, deep respect for Speaker Pelosi … and nothing against Congressman Connolly. this all felt like an obvious opportunity to use some of the lessons we should have learned from the November elections,” said Psaki.

Psaki added that Democrats have passed “one of the youngest, most media-savvy members of Congress in the important role of leading the public.”
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes also criticized Democrats for passing the AOC, and signed former House Speaker Pelosi to vote for Connolly.
“But now Pelosi has voted to make sure Connolly gets the job of looking after a young star on the team, as 84-year-old Pelosi recovers from hip surgery after a fall. It sounds like a moment of true madness,” Hayes said. “And the Democrats are not taking this issue seriously, despite everything that has happened. But they need to.”

“The View” host Sunny Hostin also spoke out against Ocasio-Cortez’s loss and spoke in favor of her progressive policies, which she said should be popular with all Americans.
“He’s got a demon on the right, and he’s got a demon like that, as a leftist, and I want to try to set the record straight because if he gets too progressive, then the Democrats are going to really lose the working class,” Hostin said Wednesday.
