Max Greyserman explains how close he came to quitting golf
PGA Tour champion Max Greyserman has put together a first season to be proud of in 2024. But the 29-year-old’s career almost came to a screeching halt two years ago.
In an appearance on GOLF’s Supbar podcast, Greyserman explained to hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz how a wrist injury almost derailed his promising future in golf.
“So I am 37 years old [in the Official World Golf Ranking] right now, and that’s a great place to be, and it looks like I’m going to Augusta, and it’s crazy to think about where I was a year ago, or even two years ago when I had wrist surgery in 2022. and I didn’t really know I was going to go pro,” Grayserman said, “and now I’m living the dream and maybe going to Augusta, so it’s just crazy where life can take you.”
When Knost asked how close Grayserman was to quitting, the new specialist revealed that after his surgery, he looked at other ways his life could go, visited his brother-in-law’s office to learn about the field, and talk. to his college friends from Duke who lived in New York City working in finance.
“I was thinking that maybe I could go hang out with them and enjoy life in a different way,” explained Greyserman.
Eventually, Greyserman realized he wasn’t done with pro golf just yet.
“I just decided that my story is not finished in golf, I just woke up one day and said ‘get back to work, I’m going to fix this wrist and get back to work,'” Grayserman said. “And as soon as I came back to the Korn Ferry Tour the following year after the surgery I was out of action, I didn’t look back, I finished 9th and this was my first year. So thank you very much.”
Interestingly, the expert revealed that it was his exploration of other careers that ultimately led him back to golf.
“I feel like the wrist surgery gave me a little perspective, because it showed me what life would have been like if I hadn’t played golf, and I think I was okay with that, and the fact that I was okay with that… that I was okay with Plan BI I think it gave me perspective to chase Plan A, who was a professional golfer.”
