Germany is urging citizens living abroad to register as soon as possible if they wish to participate in the upcoming elections that will be held on February 23.
Applications for registration may be sent to local authorities, the press office of the Federal Returning Officer confirmed to dpa with the request.
Germans living abroad are defined as unregistered citizens in Germany.
On Friday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved parliament and called for early elections on February 23, seven months ahead of schedule.
This decision follows the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition in November and the failure of a motion of confidence in his government on December 16.
The Federal Returning Officer said the postal voting period would be shorter due to the tight deadlines and advised voters to return completed ballots early to avoid delays.
The municipality of the last German registered address is responsible for sending postal voting documents to foreigners.
