Road crews were repairing a short stretch of Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey on Friday when a sinkhole forced the eastbound lanes to close, but it was not yet known when they would reopen.

A freeway rail is still hanging in the air between a 40-foot-wide (12-meter) gap, which opened when an abandoned mine collapsed under the freeway’s shoulder Thursday morning, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The sinkhole forced drivers to detour near Wharton, which is about 40 kilometers (64 miles) west of New York City.
Workers have stabilized the site and have begun digging. They will work around the clock to repair the road, said the Department of Roads on Friday.

The timing of when the eastbound lanes will be available depends on how extensive the repairs will be and future weather conditions, the department said. Drivers should continue to expect delays and use alternate routes.
