After an impressive season in 2024, Scottie Scheffler will start the new year on the sidelines.
On Friday, it was announced that the world No. 1 and Fed-Ex Cup holder has withdrawn from the PGA Tour’s 2025 season-opening tournament, The Sentry, at The Plantation Course, Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, due to competition. He got it from a kitchen accident on Christmas day.
“On Christmas Day while dinner was being prepared, Scottie suffered a gash on his right hand from broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “Small pieces of glass were left in the palm which required surgery. He was told he should be 100% in three to four weeks.”
Scheffler’s injury robs Sentry, the event formerly known as the “Tournament of Champions” of a field that once featured only the previous season’s winners, of the golfer who won more than any other last year. During his torrid 2024 campaign, Scheffler won seven times, including his second Masters title, and captured Olympic gold. He also joined Tiger Woods in guaranteed company as the second golfer to be named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons.
As unstoppable as he often was on the course, Scheffler made headlines in May, when he was arrested during a traffic incident while driving at Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, before the second round of the PGA Championship. Although the charges against Scheffler were quickly dropped, images of the game’s best player running around in an orange jail are among the most enduring images from the game in 2024.
As 2024 draws to a close, Scheffler, 28, has shown no signs of slowing down. His most recent start, at the Hero World Championship Challenge earlier this month, was another victory, six shots ahead of runner-up Tom Kim.
Fans will now have to wait to see Scheffler return to action. His next scheduled start is at American Express, in La Quinta, Calif., on Jan. 16.
The guard will continue without him. The tournament starts on Jan. 2. The full field is scheduled to be released later today.
