The ‘squad’ Dems want an end to the US investigation into the arms embargo against Israel

Three House Democrats in the progressive “Squad” are calling for an end to the US-led investigation into the arms embargo of a key ally against Israel.

Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Summer Lee, D-Pa., wrote to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), the independent agency that oversees maritime commerce affecting the US, regarding the Spain’s “decision to deny port entry to ships carrying weapons tied to the Israeli government and its ongoing killing of Palestinians in Gaza.”

“This investigation is an insult to the indifference of our partners in Spain, which only wanted to enforce independent national policies and respect international law, including its treaty obligations to prevent genocide,” wrote the left-wing lawmakers.

“It is very unfortunate that the United States is violating these obligations and its domestic laws by sending these weapons. We call on you to immediately end this obstruction of justice and withdraw this unjust investigation.”

Spain, a longtime US ally and member of NATO, has said it will stop selling weapons to Israel when its war with Hamas breaks out in October 2023.

Since then, the Spanish government has been accused in three separate incidents of refusing to allow ships to dock at their ports on suspicion that those ships were carrying weapons intended for Israel.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told state television station RTVE about one of the incidents in May, according to the Associated Press. “The Middle East needs peace. That is why this first prohibition will start the goal of any boat carrying weapons to Israel that wants to stop in a Spanish port.”

The FMC opened its investigation earlier this month after receiving information “showing that Spain has refused access to certain vessels on at least three separate occasions this year,” a press release said. “Two recent cases involved vessels flagged in the US.”

The agency will now “investigate whether the laws or practices of foreign governments result in unfavorable conditions for the transportation of vessels in foreign commerce of the United States.”

But the House Democrats wrote that: “Spain’s decisions to prevent Maersk Denver and Maersk Seletar from docking at its port in Algeciras in early November, and its decision to deny port to the Marianne Danica in the port of Cartagena. In May of this year, the legal measures taken by the sovereign state to ensure that it complies and international human rights and humanitarian law.”

Tlaib, Bush and Lee are the three most vocal critics in Congress of the Israeli government since it launched its attack on Gaza.

The campaign was launched in response to a surprise attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023 in southern Israel. Terrorists crossed the border and killed more than 1,200 Israelis who were in their homes, attending a music event, and elsewhere.

The response operation to eliminate Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 45,000 people, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

Three groups of House Democrats often accuse the Biden administration of rightfully intruding on Israel, the US’s closest ally in the Middle East.

They also said the US has no standing to investigate Spain’s decision, saying “these actions do nothing to threaten the reliable maritime supply system that the FMC is tasked with protecting.”

“No American organization should be in the business of punishing or punishing our allies for enforcing international law that our government has refused to uphold,” they wrote.

Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, made the decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state earlier this year.
