MSNBC host Jen Psaki chided Democrats for missing a “huge opportunity” to apply the lessons they should have learned from their brutal 2024 election loss to the younger, Rep. “media-savvy” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. the top Democrat on the House oversight committee.

“Instead, they chose Congressman Gerry Connolly, a very senior member with the support of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi,” the former Biden press secretary said during the broadcast of “Inside Jen Psaki.”

“Why is that important?” he continued. “This is one of the few committees in Congress that generates national attention or media coverage. Under Jamie Raskin, it’s been a critical platform to fight Republican misinformation. And while I have deep, deep respect for Speaker Pelosi … and nothing against Congressman Conolly. this all felt like an obvious opportunity to use some of the lessons we should have learned from the November election.”

“Instead, Democrats bypassed one of the youngest, most news-savvy members of Congress for an important public leadership role.”

The Democrats upset the progressive wing of the party by electing Rep. Connolly, D-Va., 74, over the 35-year-old “Squad” member by a 131-84 vote earlier this month. The Democrat’s position on the panel will clash daily with Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., who has suggested he would like to see Rep. Ocasio-Cortez appointed to the post as he more accurately describes the “social party” of the Democratic Party. the idea.

Fox News reporter Chad Pergram called the nomination “a blow to the youth movement within the Democratic Party,” as the divide between young and old threatens to “drive a wedge” through the Democratic coalition.

Former Biden challenger Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., who will soon retire from Congress, criticized the party for fleecing young talent on the team in order to keep the old guard.

“It’s time to promote the best and the brightest. We’ve literally prevented them from rising to leadership positions, which means they’re going elsewhere. And if we’re losing that kind of talent from young Americans who are willing, talented, patriotic, we’re in trouble,” he said.

Attorney Connolly insisted in contrast that the old-versus-new debate was “a false story, frankly, told by the media.”

Some leftist media criticized the party for losing the AOC.

“Pelosi cast votes to make sure Connolly gets the Oversight job over a young star on the team, as 84-year-old Pelosi recovers from hip surgery after a fall. Sounds like a moment of true madness,” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes said.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid also criticized the decision.

“[The] “gerontocracy seems intractable,” he said. “I remember when Barack Obama was elected, he threw the DNC aside and started his own organization because I think there was a frustration with the way the DNC was operating.”
