Jennifer Gray smoked ‘lots of weed’ before sex scene with Patrick Swayze in ‘Red Dawn’

Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze’s sex scene in “Red Dawn” never made it into the 1984 film because it was too much for other material.

On Dec. 20, Gray was a guest on “The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter” podcast and recalled smoking “a lot of weed” before filming the scene with a drunken Swayze.

“We were in this, you know, sleeping bag, and he was scared or whatever, and he got into the bag drunk,” Gray told host Scott Feinberg.

In “Red Dawn,” Grey, Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson and C. Thomas Howell stars as a young man who heads into the mountains to plan an attack against a Russian-led invasion.

“As an actor you look at all your stuff in the script, and you’re like, okay. I’m running. I’m shooting. I’m running. I’m throwing bombs. I’m killing myself with a hand grenade. But this is the only acting scene I can do where I’m not doing any action,” Gray said of the sex scene.

He called the photo “one of those tender scenes, which I thought was part of the reason I wanted to do the work.”

Gray noted that Swayze “didn’t know his lines. And then it was cut. And they said, ‘We’re going to come back and reshoot it.’ But of course, they didn’t.”

The actress said her costars “put explosives on my door … to trip me up.”

“I used to smoke weed in those days,” Gray explained. “So, I was very confused, and I was scared. I didn’t sleep all night. So when I went in to shoot my love scene, my big … love scene with him, I was so angry because I was, you know, all pretending to be good.”

Gray wanted the audience to “always remember, I’m a very young actor … I take everything seriously, and maybe annoying … because I want to do good.”

After starring in “Red Dawn” together, Gray and Swayze appeared in the 1987 film, “Dirty Dancing.”

Swayze died in 2009 at the age of 57 from pancreatic cancer. In April, Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi Swayze, shared how she felt after finding out her husband had pancreatic cancer.

While talking to People about her collaboration with the non-profit organization Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Lisa explained in detail how she felt when she heard about her husband’s diagnosis.

“It was the worst night of my life,” he told the outlet. “I know [Patrick] he said, ‘I’m a dead man,’ but I mean, that night, I slept with him in the hospital room. I felt like a nail was being hammered into my coffin. Your life changes slowly, and there is no escaping the reality of what that diagnosis means. It’s just bad. It’s just a scary time.”

Lisa went on to explain that when Patrick was found, it was “impossible to turn back.” He added that they were glad he “miraculously survived 22 months after that.”

Lisa explained “one of the things that came [her] through” the period following Patrick’s death in September 2009 was his constant reminder that “people do this all the time.”

“And that’s as painful as it is because I was thinking, ‘This is going to kill me. The grief is going to kill me,'” she told People. “But you know what? It doesn’t kill everyone. If they can, so can I.”

This is the five-year survival rate pancreatic cancer it has risen to 13%, according to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts & Figures 2024. However, Lisa says, “we have to do better than that.”
