A passenger bus collided with a truck near the town of Lajinha in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, fire officials said.

At least 32 people died when a bus collided with a truck on a highway in southeastern Brazil.

The Fire Department of the state of Minas Gerais, which responded to the accident that happened near the town of Lajinha the next day on Saturday, said that “between 32 and 35 people died”.

Earlier he said 13 people were taken to hospitals near the city of Teofilo Otoni.

Authorities say the bus blew a tire, the driver lost control and collided with a truck. The car also collided with the bus, but all three passengers survived, according to the fire department.

Governor Romeu Zema wrote in X that he ordered the “full mobilization” of the government of Minas Gerais to help the survivors and the families of the victims.

“We are working to ensure that the families of the deceased are supported to deal with this tragedy in a humane way, especially as it comes before Christmas,” said Zema.

According to Globo, a Brazilian media outlet, the truck driver fled the scene and is being sought by the police.

According to the Federal Highway Police, the highway where the accident happened is the most fatal in the country in 2023 as 559 people were recorded, Globo reported.

By 2024, more than 10,000 people will die in road accidents in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Transport.

In September, a bus carrying the Coritiba Crocodiles soccer team overturned on the road, killing three people.

The team from the southern city of Curitiba was heading to the game in Rio de Janeiro, which was called off after the accident.
