Texas prison inmate faces manslaughter charge after alleged attack on inmate: ‘Pure evil’
A 28-year-old Texas police officer has died after being allegedly attacked by a prisoner while returning a prisoner to his cell.
In a press conference Tuesday, Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman revealed that Officer Isaiah Bias was killed Monday during a suspected attack on the jail.
“It is with great sadness that we stand here today and acknowledge the loss of one of our own. … Isaiah Bias, 28 years old, was a dedicated jail officer for over six years with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office,” Norman said. .
Norman called the alleged attack on Aaron Thompson, 45, “pure evil” but did not reveal details of how Bias was killed.

“Most of the time, law enforcement and detention officers are dealing with good people having a bad day. Sometimes, we’re dealing with bad people,” Norman said. “I can honestly say that my staff on the last day faced pure evil.”
Norman said Thompson was charged with murder, and said he would be recommending the death penalty.

“It was a horrible, horrible, and purposeful killing that was senseless and unnecessary,” Norman said. “The final decision will be taken by the district attorney’s office whether or not they want the death penalty in this case. If I have anything to say about it, that’s exactly what will happen, but the final decision rests with the DA’s office. “
According to an affidavit obtained by KDFW, Thompson punched Bias, knocked him to the ground, then began choking him and punched him in the head, kneed him and kicked him.
The affidavit says Thompson then went to the table and sat down, leaving Bias “covered in blood.”
Thompson was jailed last month on three counts of assault on a public servant and evading arrest and was in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, Norman said.
Norman said he met Bias when he was young in a prison probation program.

“He wanted to be a law enforcement officer. He went in to work at the prison,” said Norman. “You can work in a prison when you’re 18. You can’t be a peace officer in Texas until you’re 21,” Norman said.
Norman also described Bias as “very family oriented” and said he had just become an uncle a week before his murder.

“Her sister’s baby was a week old, she was able to see the baby the day it was born,” said Norman. “He loved what he did. The people around him loved him. Law enforcement was his passion.”
The Texas Rangers have taken over the homicide investigation. Thompson was convicted, and his bond was set at $2 million.
