Ryan Routh, Trump’s alleged assassin, is facing a new trial in Florida

Ryan Routh, who is accused of trying to kill then-president Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida in September, is facing a new charge of attempted murder related to a car accident that occurred while he was trying to flee from authorities, the Florida Attorney General said. Ashley Moody announced Wednesday.

Moody said as Routh fled northbound on I-95, law enforcement was forced to shut down traffic in both directions to apprehend him and keep the public safe. However, the closure of the lane caused a road accident that injured a 6-year-old girl who was traveling with her family.

The new charge against Routh comes after what he described as a “lack of cooperation and support from federal agents” that left authorities in Florida frustrated.

“We quickly reached out and started communicating with our federal partners,” he said. “When we started those crimes, we were immediately faced with a lack of willingness to allow us to enter the crime scene, unwillingness to provide the evidence collected, unwillingness to allow us to comply with witness interviews, and the list goes on. and so on.”

Routh allegedly lay in wait for more than 12 hours in the brush at gunpoint at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach while Trump was playing golf on September 15. A Secret Service agent saw Routh point a gun at the fence and shoot him. . Routh fled and was arrested that day.

Routh has pleaded not guilty to five charges, including attempted murder of a presidential candidate and assault on a government official.

Routh last appeared in federal court for a hearing on Dec. 11. His legal team is considering an insanity defense.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis echoed Moody’s comments, saying government officials have been difficult to work with on the issue.

“The feds stopped the Florida investigation into the assassination attempt on Trump all along, and I thank AG Ashley Moody and her team for moving forward despite such resistance,” he wrote in X. “The situation will change on January 20 and we fully expect that the government’s roadblocks will be removed. The killer must face the law and the people deserve the truth about the defendant’s history, motives and his plan.”

Routh remains in federal custody. His trial is currently scheduled for Feb. 10, 2025.
