Suzanne Simpson’s missing business partner’s husband has been charged after documents emerged

Brad Simpson, the husband of missing Texas saleswoman Suzanne Simpson, remains in custody accused of murdering the 51-year-old mother of four, and her longtime business partner was formally charged this week in the investigation.

James “Val” Cotter was indicted by a grand jury Monday on charges of tampering with evidence with intent to obstruct an investigation and possession of a prohibited weapon, according to Bexar County Jail records, KSAT reported.

“If you’re in Bandera, can you drag me to meet me at your house?” Simpson allegedly sent the text, according to the affidavit. “I don’t have much time.”

Cotter replied, “I’ll be there in 40 minutes.” Simpson then wrote back, “Okay, be sure and leave all that — in the pump house, especially the gun.”

Later that day, Cotter texted Simpson, “Come here!! I won’t tell anyone,” followed by the text, “You’re my brother.”

Cotter allegedly hid Simpson’s AK-47, hiding it in the wall of his home, according to authorities. Police say the gun, which was changed to a “machine gun” was not properly registered.

Cotter was arrested on October 21 and charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a prohibited weapon, both third-degree felonies. He was released from custody last month after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $100,000, a local newspaper reported.

He cannot have contact with Brad Simpson or possess a gun, and is fitted with a GPS monitor, according to bond conditions.

Authorities said her case is related to the investigation into the disappearance of Suzanne Simpson.

On December 3, a Bexar County grand jury indicted Simpson on two counts first offense charges – murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury to a family member. These crimes carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. He was also charged with abuse of a corpse, two other charges of tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Suzanne’s DNA was reportedly found on a “reverse saw,” which law enforcement accuses Simpson of hiding, according to indictment records and KABB reporting.

The charges also add that on October 7, Simpson “did at that time, knowing that a crime had been committed, to murder, alter, destroy, and conceal the body of a person, with the intent to prejudice its availability as evidence in a subsequent investigation in connection with the crime of murder.”

Authorities said there have been no signs that Suzanne is alive since her husband beat her on October 6, and that this has been confirmed by her cell phone records, financial records, family, friends and co-workers.
