Sarah Michelle Gellar blames changes in social norms for the breakdown of long-term relationships.

In September, the 47-year-old actress and Freddie Prinze Jr., 48, who share two children together, celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary. In an interview with Fox News Digital, along with her “Dexter: Original Sin” co-star Patrick Gibson, Gellar revealed the secrets to a lasting marriage.

“I think everything works for you, whether it’s a friendship or a work relationship or a marriage,” said the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star.

“You have to put in the work,” he continued. “And we live in a very disposable society now.”

“Your phone breaks, you don’t fix it. You get a new one,” Gellar added. “And I think that’s a lot of attitude about relationships.”

“And I don’t know, maybe separate bathrooms,” the comedian joked.

Gellar and Prinze Jr. they first met while filming the 1997 hit movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and began dating in 2000. The couple announced their engagement in 2001 and tied the knot the following year in Mexico when Gellar was 24 again. Prinze was 26 years old.

Before their wedding, Prinze Jr. appeared on “The Howard Stern Show,” where the shocked actor bet a million dollars that their marriage wouldn’t last.

“So you’re going to marry Sarah Michelle Gellar, even though you know that won’t last?” Stern asked.

“Oh, it will last a long time,” answered Prinze Jr.

“I want to make a bet with you,” said the announcer. “In about 10 years, you’re going to hunt me down and go, ‘Howard, I owe you money.’

On their 20th wedding anniversary, Gellar uploaded screenshots of the conversation to her Instagram Story.

“@SternShow, I think you owe us,” she wrote, via Us Weekly.

Later Prinze Jr. shared Gellar’s post on her Instagram Story and wrote, “She will never be forgotten” along with two laughing emojis.

In a 2019 interview with Us Weekly, Gellar told the outlet that “communication” was the key to their successful marriage.

“It’s about presence,” the New York native said. “Listening is the most important thing.”

“We still make fun of each other. And we treat each other with respect,” added Prinze Jr., who noted that after the couple shared their first kiss “he didn’t go another day.”

“It was just Sarah,” she said, running through the magazine.

The couple, who co-starred in 2002’s “Scooby-Doo” and the 2004 sequel “Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed,” welcomed their first child, daughter Charlotte Grace, in 2009. In 2012, Gellar gave birth to their son, Rocky James.

Gellar and Prinze Jr. they both rose to fame in the 1990s, and became two of the biggest stars of the era. While speaking with Fox News Digital, Gellar shared her thoughts on how celebrity life in the ’90s is different from today.

“I would say the advent of social media and everyone has a camera phone,” he said. “I think you had a lot of unknowns, which sometimes I think made storytelling a little bit easier because people didn’t know a lot about everything you do or your show.”

“It’s hard to keep things intact,” Gellar added. “It shows a lot inside the house if you have to keep secrets.”

The actor stars in Showtime’s new series “Dexter: Original Sin,” which premiered on December 13. “Dexter: Original Sin” is a prequel to the network’s serial killer series “Dexter,” which starred Michael C. Hall. in the titular role and ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013.

The plot synopsis of “Dexter: Original Sin” reads, “Set in 1991 Miami, “Dexter: Original Sin” follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transforms from a student to a vengeful killer. , Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness .”

During her interview with Fox News Digital, Gellar expressed her excitement about joining the cast of the original series, sharing that she is a huge fan of “Dexter.”

“I loved the first one,” she said. “And obviously I didn’t get a chance to be a part of it. So in your head, you think, ‘That’s too bad. It would have been fun to be a part of that canon.’

Gellar continued, “And then for it to come back and be like, ‘Wait, I get to be a part of a show that I loved?’ [it] it becomes a dream opportunity.”

Gibson told Fox News Digital that he “had a lot of fun” playing Dexter as a young man and showing his journey.

“The Dexter that we all know is already fully formed by the time we start the first season,” he said. “So to play someone at that stage in their life – I know I was uncomfortable at that point in my life.”

“You’re like one foot when you’re young, one foot as an adult,” Gibson said. “The elders don’t take you seriously.”

“Of course Tanya Martin doesn’t take me seriously,” he said with a laugh as he gestured to Gellar.

“You don’t fit in with people,” the actor admitted.

“You’re not a kid either,” Gibson said. “And you also face many of these. In this case, people are killed.”

“Well, we all have firsts,” Gellar said.

“And you always remember the first time,” Gibson said. “It’s not the best thing.”

The 29-year-old actress has starred in the TV series “The Tudors,” “The OA” and “Shadow and Bone” among other roles. While speaking with Fox News Digital, Gibson noted that there were “a lot of unique challenges” in playing a character that was already familiar to audiences.

“The other thing was to continue what Michael did,” he said. “The thing I loved about Michael’s performance is that when you meet him, there’s a lot of him in that role.”

Gibson continued, “It was finding a balance between the two because obviously just making an impression can be a little cold even for a psychopath.”

“But then again it was like remembering that,” he added. “I think we’re trained as actors to be empathetic on set. And you’re working with some of the best actors ever.”

“And like to remind yourself that you can’t be too affected by situations and you’re more calculating than you might appear. That was a bit of a challenge.”
