Pirates Release Trey Cabbage – MLB Trade Rumors
The Pirates released a first baseman/outfielder Trey Cabbageas first shown in the MLB.com activity log. Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports Cabbage will pursue an opportunity in the foreign league. That opens up a spot on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster, down to 37.
Pittsburgh said Cabbage was waived by the Astros last month. Houston tried to cut him from their roster earlier in the season. Cabbage wouldn’t be fighting for a spot in Spring Training with the Bucs, but there was no guarantee he would stay on the roster all winter. Even if he holds the 40-man spot, Cabbage has an option remaining and is likely to spend most of next year in Triple-A.
It appears his camp is finalizing a deal with a team in another league that may come with a better payday. Cabbage has an interesting energy-speed combination. He had a 30-30 showing with a .306/.379/.596 slash in Triple-A with the Angels in 2023. His minor league production wasn’t as strong this year (.243/.351/.474) but he made a career-high 45 MLB appearances with the Astros. The MLB lineup exploited Cabbage’s tendency to get a high percentage of shots from the top minors, making him a nearly 41% clip. He is a career .209/.245/.331 hitter in 147 plate appearances.
