Iran/American citizen indicted in connection with Iran strike that killed US personnel

Two Iranian men have been charged in connection with the strike that killed three US citizens and injured scores of others.

Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi was arrested in Massachusetts and is expected to appear in court on Monday. Another suspect, Mohammad Abedininajafabadi, was arrested in Italy and is being held by Italian authorities, state prosecutors said.

The charges relate to the deadly January 28 strike against US forces, the first since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023.

Three Army Reserves – Sgt. William Jerome Rivers; Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, all residents of Georgia – were killed on Jan. 28 in Jordan and 47 others were injured in a drone attack that targeted a military base known as Tower 22 near the Syrian-Iraq border.

All three were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade, at Fort Moore, Georgia.

The troops were deployed to Jordan in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, which is the name of the US military’s fight against the Islamic State terrorist group.

Rivers, 46, served in the Army Reserve as an interior electrician; while Sanders, 24, and Moffett, 23, work as horizontal construction engineers.

In response to this deadly attack, the US launched retaliatory strikes on more than 85 targets Iraq and Syria against the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and subordinate military groups.

Targets included command and control operations, intelligence facilities, military group rockets, missiles, unmanned vehicle depots and supply chain servicesUS Central Command (CENTCOM) said at the time.

The deaths of these soldiers signaled an increase in violence against American soldiers in the Middle East. At the time, the Biden administration blamed the attack on US support for Israel amid the ongoing war with Hamas.
