‘Yellowstone’ star Luke Grimes says Kevin Costner’s exit made it the ‘easiest season we’ve ever filmed’

“Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes isn’t “pointing fingers,” but filming the final episodes of season five without Kevin Costner was a breath of fresh air.

During a sit-down with Esquire, Grimes spoke about Costner’s notable absence during the Western’s final installment.

“I hope everyone realizes it’s about time,” Grimes said, referring to Costner’s exit.

“To be honest, there was a part of Kevin not being there that meant the conflict was over. Obviously, it didn’t make it any more fun to be around. Not to point fingers, but it was actually the easiest season I’ve ever recorded,” he continued.

The series finale of “Yellowstone” airs on Dec. 15. According to Grimes, the show that will end after seven years on the air “was a good time.”

“Seven years is a long time to do anything, and I’d never played a character for more than a few months before. I loved it all. But there’s a part of it that – once you read those last episodes – you see that there’s an end to it,” he says.

Grimes, who stars as Kayce Dutton on the show, has spoken about the possibility of a twist coming.

“There is always talk of spin offs. I can do that [but] I don’t understand how it’s going to work when the story is over,” Grimes said. “Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his family.

“He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a big farm that can’t sustain in today’s times anymore. He wants his piece of heaven. It’s that simple.”

From the beginning, the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, kept the ending to Grimes on purpose.

“From the beginning, Taylor told me, ‘I know how the show ends, but I don’t want you to know how it ends,'” she said. “‘I think you can just play things differently [if you knew the ending]and I don’t want you to know anything.’

“So, I kept that in mind, and I wanted to wait to read it until we shot the last episode. But it had been a long time since we shot and I felt like I didn’t remember what we did. I didn’t. remember playing Kayce I couldn’t lock it.
