Elton John calls legalization of marijuana ‘one of the biggest mistakes’ after struggles with addiction
Elton John has strong feelings about the legalization of marijuana.
This rock star who was chosen as Icon of the Year by Time magazine this week spoke to the media about his long-term problem with drugs and alcohol. John’s experience with addiction led to his strong resistance to the use of marijuana.
“I still believe it is addictive,” he said. “It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned—I’m stoned—you don’t think normally.”
The singer added, “The legalization of marijuana in America and Canada is one of the biggest mistakes of all time.”

Time reported that when John was asked if he had the same thoughts as alcohol, he remained silent and looked to husband David Furnish, who was also present at the interview, for help answering. Furnish then offered a response that “suggests that while alcohol is part of society’s foundation, there are studies that find it’s much less healthy than people believe it is.”
In 1974, the same year John released hits like “Bennie and the Jets” and “Candle in the Wind,” he was introduced to cocaine and ended up addicted.

“He makes bad decisions about drugs,” he recalled. “I was looking for love so badly, I was just abducted. I would see the person I love living with us for three or four months, and he would get angry with me because he has nothing in his life except me. That really upsets me.” , I think how many people I hurt.”
Bernie Taupin, John’s longtime songwriting partner, also spoke to the company, saying, “I was in awe of him. It was terrible. A lot of the work we did when he was at his worst wasn’t very good. Both of us.”
He added, “I couldn’t invest any time in writing things related to him until he found himself, and then it was easier for me to think about it.”

It was in 1990 that John got clean, and he has been sober ever since. In July, he shared an Alcoholics Anonymous chip with the caption, “34 years clean and sober. My life has never been better.”
“It’s hard to tell someone you’re an a-hole, and it’s hard to hear,” he admitted in his interview with Time. “I finally made the choice to admit that I’m a–an a-hole.”

Later in the interview, John again touched on humility, beginning his statement with, “I’ve never lost the joy of buying a new record, a new book, a new picture.”
He went on to say that if he had to choose between not playing music again or not listening to it anymore, he would stop playing it, saying that listening to music is what kept me going.

John explained, “I don’t really believe in the God of the Bible, but I have faith. My higher power has been taking care of me all my life; he got me off drugs, he got me out of depression, he helped me. I was lonely, and he made me sad. He has always been there, I think I didn’t accept him.

She and Furnish have two sons, Zachary, born in 2010, and Elijah, born in 2013. He told Time that if he had the chance to give them his talent and the fame that comes with it, he wouldn’t do it.
“I’ve lived an incredible life, but it’s been a painful life, and it’s been a struggle,” he said. “I wouldn’t want that much pressure on them.”

“If people remember that we tried to change the world a little bit, we were kind, we tried to help people,” he said, that would be good for him. “And then, besides that, there was music.”
