Whatsapp and Instagram have been restored after the release of Meta

Instagram and WhatsApp are now back online after a major global outage affected several Meta-owned apps on Wednesday.

Facebook has not yet confirmed whether all of its problems have been resolved.

“Thanks for your patience! We’re 99% of the way there – final testing. Apologies to those affected by the outage,” Meta, which owns the apps, told X.

More than 22,000 people reported problems on Facebook on Wednesday evening and more than 18,000 had difficulty using WhatsApp, according to the Downdetector website.

Problems with the apps have been reported in the UK, parts of Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US.

“And we are back, talking and having fun!” WhatsApp said on X.

“Andddd we’re back – sorry for the wait, and thanks for putting up with us,” Instagram said.

The outage began around 18:00 GMT on Wednesday, according to Downdetector. Its numbers are based on outage reports and the actual number of affected users may vary greatly.

Shortly after users reported the problems, Meta said it was aware of a “technical issue” that was “affecting some users’ ability to access our apps” and said it was working to fix things as soon as possible.

Various issues have been reported including not being able to use apps at all or feeds not refreshing for some users.

“We are aware of some issues reaching WhatsApp. We are actively working on a solution and are starting to see a return to normalcy for many people. We expect things to return to normal soon,” WhatsApp said at the same time.

Meta platforms are some of the most popular in the world. Facebook has over three billion monthly users.

Meta’s biggest disruption was in 2021 when founder Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the disruption caused.

Meanwhile, the services of Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram went down for about six hours.
