Washington state could be one of the first in the nation to introduce a three-gender division of high school sports to prevent natural males from competing against girls.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has announced a proposal to create a separate, open division for transgender athletes to compete. One of the amendments proposes the creation of a girls division and an open division where athletes can participate, regardless of their gender. identity corresponds to the gender assigned to them at birth.
“In order to maintain fair and equitable competition, participation in girls’ sports and girls’ divisions in sports is limited to students who were assigned female at birth. High school athletes in the state are currently allowed to compete based on their gender rather than their natural sex. The WIAA’s policy states that each athlete will participate in programs “consistent with his or her gender identity or gender expression,” and there are no medical or legal requirements. Bills to prevent transgender girls from participating in girls’ and women’s sports have been introduced but not passed.
Washington is one of 25 states in the US to have laws in place to protect the participation of girls and women in sports.
The proposal comes weeks after the state’s school board voted to send a letter to the WIAA urging it to revise its current rules that allow trans athletes to compete against women.
The Central Valley School Board, which oversees schools in the Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake, Washingtonvoted to send a message to the WIAA about the issues after much debate at the school board meeting.
The decision, titled “Supporting Equity and Safety in Female Sports,” states that the entire board is made up of female members who have competed in athletics themselves or have daughters who have participated in athletics.
