‘Dear White People:’ Group members post condemning ‘white supremacist evil’ after Penny’s rejection
Outgoing Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., sent a lengthy statement aimed at “white people” on Tuesday after Daniel Penny’s outing in the death of Jordan Neely.
On May 1, 2023, Penny confronted Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man with schizophrenia who had an active arrest warrant and a history of violence, as he shouted death threats on the subway. With the help of other passengers, Penny stopped Neely from choking her, but Neely later died.
Upset that the jury found Penny not guilty of negligent homicide, Bowman went to X in his last days in office to write a thread that began, “Dear White People.”
“I don’t know why I feel the need to continue talking to you,” continued this “Squad” member. “I don’t know why part of me still has hope for you and us. Some of you have gone too far. But maybe enough is enough of you who are not like that and you will join us in the fight to end white supremacy.”

He continued, “I just want to call out the hypocrisy and evil of it all and continue to hope. I will not completely rely on you because I know that the most important thing is to work with our community and other like-minded partners in the war. for justice.”
After listing the deaths of prominent people and the violence against Black people like Rodney King, Eric Garner and George Floyd, which he had watched on video, the law enforcement member added Neely while saying, “He was not a threat. He was defeated. He is still not a threat. Daniel Penny choked him for 6 minutes and killed him .
“I have left a hundred other instances of this trauma in my life,” Bowman wrote. “In comparison, I ask white people, how many times have you seen a white person killed in cold blood on camera in your news paper? How many times have you heard about this?”
“The answer is never. Never,” he said, although some X users pointed out the irony of the statement about the video of the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“And whenever you feel uncomfortable because of your whiteness, Black people are hurt or killed. And there is never any accountability or justice. This is the evil of white supremacy. It affects every place and political party and it makes us all sick,” he continued.
“I wish I didn’t have to live with all this trauma deep in my bones. I wish I could just be free to be myself. I’m amazed by the beauty and greatness of our people despite the white people passing by. It’s amazing. That’s what I’ll continue to lean on.”
“RIP Jordan Neely. The justice system failed. Kyle Ritenhouse and Daniel Penny are free. You are gone. We still have to fight,” he concluded. The Rittenhouse shooting involved only white men.
JORDAN NEELY CHOKEHOLD DEATH WITNESS CALLS DANIEL PENNY ‘A HERO’
Social media users expressed shock that the congressman would only address any kind of message to White people.
Independent reporter Brad Polumbo responded, “I can’t believe that this person, a congressman, just suggested that he doesn’t know why he needs to keep talking to an entire racial group. Tf?”
Author Katherine Brodsky wrote, “Any post that starts with ‘dear white people’ shows a dangerous narcissist and bigot. I would never dream of talking to people about their skin color as if there is some kind of collective people.”
“Can we stop making everything about race?” Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire asked, to which Elon Musk replied, “Yes, please. This has gone on too long. Enough is enough.”
“It’s a shame that this kind of stupid, hateful, manipulative rhetoric ever worked. Now it’s given a measure, but a few years ago, there would have been people in the literature apologizing for their privilege. Never forget—and never forget—that madness,” said Christopher Rufo of the Manhattan Institute.
Novelist Kat Rosenfield has written that she is “glad to have passed the time when we all had to pretend this wasn’t a completely crazy thing for an elected official to say publicly; there was a lot of public pressure to say that but honestly, I don’t think anyone ever really liked it.”
Fox News contributor Guy Benson said Bowman’s post was “racist.”
“Thank you to the racist guy who lost his seat because he’s crazy,” wrote RedState’s Bonchie.
