Biden about face by pardoning son Hunter unpopular with Americans, study finds

President Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter after previously vowing not to give his son a passport was approved by only 20 percent of Americans, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found nearly half of adults disapprove of the pardon, which came after Hunter was convicted of the shooting and tax.

About 18% of adults neither agreed nor opposed the decision, while 8% said they did not know enough to say one way or the other, according to the poll.

Although Democrats are more likely to approve of the pardon than Republicans and Independents, the poll showed that only 38% of Democrats approved compared to 27% who said they disapproved of the face.

The first son was convicted in two separate cases earlier this year. He pleaded guilty to federal tax charges in September, and was convicted of three counts of gun homicide in June after he lied on a mandatory gun purchase form that he was not illegally using or under the influence of drugs.

The president argued in a statement that Hunter was “only single because he is my son” and that there was an attempt to “break Hunter” in order to “break me.”

Reporters accused White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre a day after the pardon, asking if Biden and his entourage lied to the American people. Jean-Pierre responded, “What the president believes in is always being honest with the American people,” and again pointed to Biden’s statement on the matter.
