Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers file appeal against fired court clerk accused of rape
Defense attorneys for ex-convict Alex Murdaugh filed a motion to challenge his sentence Tuesday, saying improper testimony and Clerk Becky Hill’s alleged obstruction of justice “unfairly tainted the case.”

Prosecutors allege that Murdaugh used his power and his family’s influence in the Lowcountry to take on clients’ cases, earn them “a lot of money” and keep a decent portion of the proceeds for himself.

But in their 132-page motion, filed Tuesday, Murdaugh’s attorneys said their client’s financial charges should not have been included in his previous murder case, saying they were irrelevant and would have painted him in a negative light that would have prejudiced the jury.

The complaint also alleges that former Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill, who resigned over allegations of jury tampering in Murdaugh’s case, swayed the jury to find him guilty.

Of the 12 jurors who found Murdaugh guilty of murder in March 2023, 11 said Hill had no influence on their decisions. Another said he heard the clerk make a comment about looking at Murdaugh’s body, but said his words did not influence his decision.

Judge Jean Toal ruled in January that the allegations against Hill were not enough to grant a new trial for murder. Murdaugh’s lawyers contested the decision in their appeal.

Hill, accused of 76 ethics violations, was expected to face the Commission on Government Ethics on December 19. But that hearing has been put on hold due to a pending investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, the State newspaper reported.

The complaint also claims that prosecutors presented several guns as evidence that had no evidence linking them to the murders, and that gunshot residue on a raincoat shown in court was not linked to their client by any evidence.
