Donald Trump says this is what made him win last month’s presidential election

President-elect Trump says his victory in the White House last month hinged on two things.

“I won at the border, and I won at the grocery store,” the president-elect said in an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”

Trump then cited lower grocery prices for millions of Americans as a key reason for his White House victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.

“It’s a very simple word, grocery. Like – you know, who uses the word? I started using the word – grocery. When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they doubled and tripled in price for a short period of time, and I won the election based on that ,” Trump emphasized in his speech, which was taped on Friday and broadcast on Sunday.

While inflation has slowed significantly since peaking in 2022, grocery prices remain much higher than they were before the COVID pandemic hit the world nearly five years ago.

According to the latest Consumer Price Index Inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans are buying 22% more food compared to what they paid when President Biden took office nearly four years ago.

And voter frustration with higher grocery prices, as well as other effects of inflation, benefited Trump as he ran for the White House.

Voters say the economy is far and away the biggest problem facing the country, followed by immigration and abortion, according to Fox News Voter Analysis of the 2024 election.

And 40% say inflation is the single most important factor in their vote, and they support Trump by almost two to one, according to Fox News Voter Analysis, which was a survey of more than 110,000 voters and 18,000 non-voters nationwide. AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 registered voters, had similar findings.

On the presidential campaign trail, Trump railed against the Biden/Harris economy and promised to lower rates.

“Grocery prices are up,” Trump said during an August news conference, as he stood next to tables full of packaged food.

“If I win, I will reduce the prices immediately, starting from the first day,” he vowed.

And in his “Meet the Press” interview, Trump promised that “we’re going to bring those prices down.”

But Trump, in an interview, insisted he would follow through on his campaign pledge to impose higher tariffs on imports from the country’s major trading partners.

During the presidential campaign, Harris argued that Trump’s all-time high tariffs, if implemented, would raise prices on many goods and be a “sales tax on the American people.”

The prices are there taxes that governments place on goods that are imported or exported. They can raise the cost of imported products, making local products more attractive to buy.

Asked in a recent interview if he could guarantee that his tariffs would not force Americans to pay more, Trump replied, “I can’t guarantee anything.”
