Lawyer James Clyburn suggests that democracy is still in danger after the last election: The election of 1876 ‘led to Jim Crowe’.
Attorney James Clyburn, DC, suggested on Friday that warning Americans about a vulnerable democracy during the 2024 election was necessary, responding to former President Barack Obama’s comments that it was not very important to voters.
“I remembered, as we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of this country, we had a presidential election in 1876 … And you see what happened to democracy in that election. It led to Jim Crow,” Clyburn told CNN’s Dana Bash.

Clyburn also explained that the 2024 presidential election could mean something like Jim Crowe-era voter suppression is about to happen again.
“I’m the ninth African-American to serve in Congress from South Carolina. The problem is 95 years between number eight and nine because democracy was so embedded in people’s lives back in 1876,” Clyburn said.
“And there is a risk of that happening again,” he added.
Clyburn hit back at Obama on Thursday, pointing to efforts by Democrats to brand Trump as a threat to democracy, saying the results showed he was far from popular with voters. Obama spoke at the Obama Foundation’s Democracy Forum in Chicago, Illinois, his first public remarks following the 2024 election.

“The talk of ending our differences at a time when the country and the world seem to be divided, it sounds like an educational training that sounds far-fetched, and stupid. Especially as they saw it, the election proved that democracy is too far. important list of people,” said Obama.
Clyburn said that although Obama was “accurate in his assessment,” he doubts whether the country should move forward.
“I think they’re right, not necessarily right, but they’ve shown that they are,” Clyburn said. He continued, “So while President Obama is correct in his assessment, the question is, is that a good place for the country to be?”
After Trump’s decisive victory against Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats and media professionals began an autopsy of the election results. Some members of the Democratic Party have pointed to the party’s neglect of working-class voters and inattention to important economic issues as they attack President-elect Trump.
