What is fraud?

Scambaiting is when someone contacts a scammer to waste their time and resources. Some of this online activity is fun and exciting to watch. Instead of falling for their tricks, scammers play along, knowing it’s a scam, and assume the role of victim to keep the scammers busy. But get this – now there’s another new technology to do the trick for you.

Why fraud is important

So, why should we care about fraud? This creative strategy offers several compelling advantages. First and foremost, it wastes the scammers’ time. Every minute they spend on the phone with Daisy is a minute they can use to understand the real victims. By keeping them busy, we can prevent them from cheating someone else.

In addition to wasting time, fraud raises awareness about common scams. It serves as an educational tool, helping others to recognize and avoid falling prey to similar tactics. The more people understand how these scams work, the less likely they are to become victims. In addition, watching fraudsters get distracted sheds light on the lengths these criminals will go to and highlights the importance of remaining vigilant against their schemes.

“Hello there! I’m just trying to understand how this award works. Can you explain it again? I’m not as tech-savvy as I used to be?”

That’s Daisy, the artificial intelligence-powered grandmother developed by Virgin Media O2 to communicate with fraudsters. When a scam call comes in, Daisy automatically answers and engages the caller in a conversation, wasting their time. With his friendly personality and quick thinking, he keeps them in check while gathering useful information about their tactics. Daisy combines various AI models that work together to listen and answer fake calls instantly. He is so lifelike that he has successfully kept many scammers on the phone for 40 minutes at a time. By tricking criminals into thinking they are scamming a real person and playing on the fraudsters’ bias towards adults, Daisy has prevented them from targeting real victims.

Now, before you get too excited, Daisy is currently only available to Virgin Media O2 customers in the UK, but other US companies are starting to offer similar AI-powered solutions. For example, Apate.ai developed AI.Callee, which engages cheaters in real-time conversations on various channels. Another US company, Scamneticintroduced an AI-based scam-detection solution that can be integrated with business platforms to protect consumers from various types of fraud.

Protecting yourself from robocall scams

While fraud can be a fun way to combat scams, the best defense is to simply not pick up and answer scam calls in the first place. One effective strategy is to consider investing in personal data removal services that erase your information from public databases online. By reducing your digital footprint, you can make it more difficult for fraudsters to contact you in the first place. While no service promises to remove all of your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to stay on top of it and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites over a long period of time.

Whether it’s Daisy keeping fraudsters busy or people taking steps to protect their personal information, every effort is important in the ongoing fight against fraud.
