Ryan Reynolds Defends Comedy As ‘Too Hard’
Ryan Reynolds defends comedy as a “very difficult” job after a social media user appeared to question why the actor was cast Variety‘s “Actors to Players”.
“Andrew Garfield talking about playing husband and father [whose] wife decides to stop cancer treatment and Ryan Reynolds talks about playing Deadpool,” user X wrote in a deleted comment, Varietywhere they also shared the complete pairing list for the December installment of the series.
In response, Reynolds, 48, wrote a lengthy message about the similarities and differences between comedy and fantasy, beginning by applauding Garfield, 41, and Florence Pugh for their performance in We live in a Time.
“Okay. Andrew is an excellent host. He and Florence are the magic together of WE LIVE IN THE TIME. They are heartbreaking and endearing and spend the entire film in an act of humanity and responsibility,” Reynolds wrote. “And yes I’m Deadpool BUT I’m going to take a moment to speak and defend the comics. Amazing work is hard. And we are meant to SEE hard which is one of the reasons why it looks good and works well.”
He continued, “Comedies are also very difficult. But it has an extra dimension because it’s meant to look and feel simple. He deliberately hides texture and non-stitching. I think both fields are good. And the two work well together. Comedy and drama are alive and kicking. Both succeed when expectations are broken. They both thrive on being inhibited by real emotion. And both are deeply independent. Your favorite jokes can be The Anchorman. Mine might be Lars von Trier‘s Melancholia.”
Social media users applauded Reynolds’ statement, with one writing, “Yes! That’s why I love comedy. It’s a discipline that requires a lot of thought, yet it comes off as the complete opposite. The drama is also amazing, but there can be more drama in a comedy if it’s done right.”
Another said, “As someone who likes comedies more than dramas, I agree, both deserve respect.”
Reynolds’ interview with Garfield will be the first Varietythe new season of “Actors in Actors.” Other pairings include Ariana Grande again Paul Mescal, Nicole Kidman again Zendaya, Saoirse Ronan again Selena Gomez, Angelina Jolie again Cynthia Erivo and more.
Reynolds, who played in 2016 Deadpool and its 2018 sequel, teamed up with a longtime friend Hugh Jackman the third in the superhero franchise, which opened in theaters in July.
Deadpool and Wolverine – which featured a number of cameos including Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, Chris Evans and Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively – has grossed over $1 billion worldwide since its release.
In November, Reynolds revealed that she and Jackman, 56, and Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levywill reunite for a new film that “he wrote for himself, Hugh and Shawn to do something that’s not Marvel.” Reynolds and Levy, 56, have worked in movies before Free Guy again Adam’s project.
