When Dexter: Original Sin announced, the fans groaned in unison. After all, it’s real Dexter the show ended with a terrible episode, and the prequels of popular IPs were played for a long time. However, like the title character planning his next murder, I spent some time pondering the possibilities of a series focusing on the early years of Dexter Morgan’s transformation into Miami’s best-known serial killer. And I came to a shocking conclusion like Rita’s sudden death back in season 4: because of the complex stories and unanswered questions, Dexter may be the only TV show that needs a prequel.
Dexter Prequel Story
What is this Dexter prequel about, exactly? Dexter: Original Sin is set in the ’90s and focuses on how our protagonist (Patrick Gibson) becomes a serial killer with a strict moral code enforced by his father (Christian Slater). Michael C. Hall will return to narrate as an adult Dexter, and it’s almost impossible to avoid comparisons to the show NCIS: The Originsalso set in the ’90s, features a diverse cast playing familiar characters, and features voices from Mark Harmon as old Agent Gibbs.
That comparison is a good starting point for discussing why Dexter is the only show that really needs to have a prequel. An important problem of NCIS: The Origins that although it divides its time between the cases of the weekly procedure and the development of the character of Gibbs, it does not offer the viewers anything new. We get new characters doing the same thing as their interesting counterparts every week in the beginning NCISand many of the characters mentioned above are fantastic retellings of events that fans have already heard about.
Reason Needs a Dexter Prequel
Why then I think Dexter it needs a prequel more NCIS any other show? First, there’s still a lot about the title character’s story that we could use more detailed information about. Like, Dexter’s police officer father discovers that his son has endless murderous urges and arms him against the bad guys. We only know the broad strokes of how that works, but it would be very rewarding to see this dad (played by hurling icon Christian Slater, no less) develop a crazy solution to an unimaginable problem.
As a big fan of the original Dexter (minus that God-awful ending), I also hope that the show that precedes it will elaborate on how our favorite blood-splatter analysis successfully infiltrates the police and hides his murderous actions from people whose entire job is to bust killers like him. It’s part of the original show’s off-kilter charm, but the idea of a mass murderer hiding among the police is insanely absurd. Possibly, this Dexter A prequel would help show how our boy pulled this off as he draws on his relationships with fan favorite characters like Batista and Masuka.
Learning to Be a Better Killer
Finally, a Dexter A prequel could help explain all the early mistakes the young killer made that forced him to hide better next time. For example, his romantic involvement with Rita in the reality show was partly motivated by his need to socialize and not be seen for what he really is: a busy, single, white man who is the profile of too many real killers. For long-time fans, it would be fun to see the latest screwups our hero goes through to become the confident killer of the original TV show.
Television is full of sequels, but even the best ones are technically unnecessary: Better Call Saulfor example, it is the gold standard, but it is often drowning in a young child Breaking Bad a character rather than a game that helps us better understand the original series. Similarly, fantasy fare like The House of the Beast or Rings of Power it offers some interesting teaching, but none that feels like it’s necessary for you to understand better, respectively Game of Thrones show or the Lord of the Rings movies.
Dexter is officially the only show that needs a prequel to help us flesh out its main character and fully understand the previous series. And we can all see how well it does there Dexter: Original Sin will premiere Friday the 13th on Paramount+. And showrunner Clyde Phillips (who hosted the first four seasons of the original Dexter), this prequel series should not be boring.
