An Oregon prosecutor is criticizing the ‘laxity’ of a state law protecting a man convicted of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl.
An 18-year-old Oregon man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, and prosecutors are criticizing a state law that would significantly reduce his prison time.
Daniel Ryan Gore may be eligible for less than ten years in prison under the law in question, as he was only 16 at the time of the murder.
The state law that would have given Gore protection, Senate Bill 1008, which passed five years ago, drew heavy criticism from the Washington County prosecutor.

Chief Deputy District Attorney John Gerhard said even the judge in charge of the case was shocked when he heard about the protection under the law, according to KPTV.
Gerhard, who prosecuted the case, said he believes Gore is a violent criminal who deserves the punishment he deserves.

“He should serve the rest of his life in prison based on the crimes he committed,” Gerhard told KPTV.
Gore was convicted last month of raping and killing 13-year-old Milana Li in 2022 in Beaverton, Oregon. The authorities accused him of luring the girl to a forest area, beating her and leaving her body in a stream.

He was sentenced on Monday.
While he was 16 at the time of the crime, he was found eligible to be tried as an adult due to the seriousness of his crimes.
