Michigan fans booed VP-elect Vance after his alma mater Ohio State lost to Michigan
Vice President-elect JD Vance praised his Ohio State Buckeyes after Saturday’s loss to rival Michigan. The internet was not so kind in response.
Vance wrote to X, saying the Buckeyes played “like champions” and that he was “proud of them.”
“To the OSU seniors on that team: I know it hurts to lose to Michigan, but throughout your college career you guys have handled yourself like champions. I speak for almost every fan when I say: we are proud of you!” Vance wrote.
The Buckeyes entered the game as 21-point favorites, losing to their top rival for the fourth time in a row. The 2024 Michigan team is the worst the program has been in years, entering the game with a 6-5 record.

Coming into the game, Ohio State was ranked No. 2 with a 10-2 record and was fighting for a spot in the Big 10 championship game and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Now both of those goals are being questioned by coach Ryan Day and his team.
The Buckeyes also had an altercation with Michigan players after the game.

Vance earned a lot of shots because of his loyalty to the team in response.
“Ohio State sucks and so do you!” one user wrote.
One user said Vance’s post prompted her to reconsider her endorsement of Vance as Trump’s pick.
“For the first time, I disagree with JD in a while [minute]maybe Trump should have gone the other way for the VP role!” the user wrote.

Another user asked Vance recommending players to start a postgame feud.
“‘Behave like champions’ didn’t they just get into a fight that led to the Michigan players being pepper sprayed because they were so defeated?” the user wrote.
A number of police officers also contributed to ending the fight. Videos shared on social media appeared to show players being pepper sprayed, and both Michigan and Ohio State players appeared to be in pain as a result.
Shortly after the fight, Michigan running back Kalel Mullings told FOX Sports in an on-field interview that the incident was “bad for sports.”

“It was a great game. You hate to see things like that happen after the game. It’s bad for sports, it’s bad college football. But, at the end of the game, they have to learn to lose, man. You can’t fight and stuff because you lost the game.”
Vance previously revealed that he told Trump that his loyalty to the Buckeyes could hurt Trump’s chances of winning the Michigan battleground.
“When he first asked me to be VP, I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, I hope we don’t lose Michigan by 900 votes, because you’re going to regret it.’ Because only a thousand p. —ed-off Wolverine fans won’t vote for Buckeye,” Vance said during an appearance on OutKick’s. “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.”
“But I think most Michiganders will be able to put aside sports rivalries and put country first, which, of course, we all believe is the most important thing.”
The Democratic National Committee tried to exploit Vance’s connection to Ohio State with a campaign strategy in Michigan in early September. The DNC flew a plane over a Michigan football game Sept. 7 with a banner that read, “JD Vance [loves] State of Ohio [plus] Project 2025.”

The Trump-Vance ticket ended up easily carrying Michigan.
Vance also suggested in that interview that Trump and Vance would attend Saturday’s game if they won the election.
“Well, let’s go to the Ohio State-Michigan game, we think we’re going to win, because I bet I can get some nice tickets as the VP-Elect, and we’ll be in a state of celebration,” Vance told OutKick. “And, look, it’s going to be a big game this year. I think it’s going to determine the final outcome of the College Football Playoff.
“I mean, now both teams could be in the playoffs. I know people in Michigan don’t rate them high this year, but you never know, because it’s always a good program. So, we’re going to be there, guys. I feel really good about the Buckeyes.
Neither Trump nor Vance attended Saturday’s Ohio State-Michigan game.
