Benastick was found when two people walking on the Redfern Lake Trail to work saw him coming towards him. He used crutches to feed himself and used a cut sleeping bag to keep his legs warm.

The men took Benastick to the hospital, where the police confirmed that he was missing.

He told the police that he stayed in his car for a while but then walked to the stream and the mountain where he camped for 10 to 15 days. After that, he went down the valley and built a camp and shelter in a dry riverbed before dropping the two men.

“Finding Sam alive is a very good outcome. After all the time he was missing, it was feared this would not be the outcome,” said RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.

The agency continued to thank the many authorities who provided assistance during the search, as well as the Canadian Rangers and volunteers who have extensive back-country experience.
